U.N. Report: Two-Thirds of the World’s Ecosystems Are in Trouble

A new report released today by international scientists for the United Nations warns that the world is using up its natural resources too quickly and that approximately two-thirds of the earth’s ecosystems are in danger of being destroyed.

The report said that 15 of the world’s 24 major ecosystems were in decline and that unless something was done to reverse this trend, the situation will get much worse over the next half century.

Why install a blog on a family website?

A weblog, Web log or simply a blog, contains periodic posts on a common webpage. Often, the word blog is used to describe an online diary or journal. The weblog format of an online diary makes it possible for users without much experience to create, format, and post entries with ease. People write of their day-to-day experiences, complaints, poems, prose, and more, often allowing others to contribute, fulfilling to a certain extent the original view of the World Wide Web as a collaborative medium.

Yesterday I met a journalist….

Yesterday I met a journalist named Sarah Evans, 23. She is an intern at the Town Crier group of local newspapers. She is writing an article about my new venture, Family Memories. We met at the Indigo Book Store Starbucks at Yonge and Eglinton here in Toronto. Sarah used a tape recorder to record our interview.

What is terrific about Sarah is that she has had Cerebral Palsy since she was a year old. She can only get around in a wheel chair and has difficulty moving her hands and speaking. She gets around on Wheel Trans, the Toronto Transit Commission’s service for the disabled. It’s an excellent service but she must book it 24 hours in advance.

Second Client

Today we landed our second client, the Moir family of Lindsay, Minden, and Toronto, Ontario.

Their Family Memories’ website will be at www.moir.ca.

They are especially interested in Family Memories’ video interviews with the senior members of the family.

Career blog

We have had our family website up for several weeks now, www.theforemans.ca. My family have asked that it be private so it is accessible only to family members. We are now 33 descendants of my monther and late father. The latest was born yesterday.

My 18 year old niece living in Victoria, BC posted to our main blog about her University of Victoria courses and mused about her career choices. This prompted us to create a Career Blog and to ask the older cousins, in their 30’s, to write about their careers as lawyers, accountants, entrepreneurs, business people, etc to help the younger ones with their career choices.

Helen Keller Quotations

-It gives me a deep comforting sense that all things seen are temporal and things unseen are eternal.

-Although the world is full of suffering, it is full also of the overcoming of it.

-Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. Security does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than exposure.

-Many persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.

-I long to accomplish a great and noble task; but it is my chief duty to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble.

-We would never learn to be brave and patient if there were only joy in the world.

-People do not like to think. If one thinks, one must reach conclusions. Conclusions are not always pleasant.

-No pessimist ever discovered the secrets of the stars or sailed to an uncharted land or opened a new heaven to the human spirit.

-The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.

-One can never consent to creep when one feels an impulse to soar.

-I long to accomplish a great and noble task but it is my chief duty to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble…. The world is moved along, not only by the mighty shove of its heroes, but also by the aggregate of the tiny pushes of the honest worker.

-I am only one, but still I am one; I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; I will not refuse to do the something I can do.

Welcome!

Hello Everyone,

I founded Family Memories to help families use the Internet to preserve family history, maintain strong family ties, and improve communications between family members who live far apart.

The Internet is a wonderful tool for decreasing distance. Families are able to almost replicate the way life was generations ago when most family members lived within easy visiting distance.
